SAM: Lock the damn doors.

ME: I will, old man.

I half expect a snarky text back, but I’m not completely surprised when it’s radio silence from there on out. I spend the rest of the night playing with Kermie, cooking some shrimp tacos, and binge-watching the first two Harry Potter movies. I start the third, but with the way my lids are drooping I know I’m not going to make it far.

I haven’t heard from Sam since yesterday when he dropped me off. He didn’t show up with the crew today and Aaron told me he took a personal day because he stayed all night with his dad.

I wanted to reach out to him today, but it never felt right, like it wasn’t my place. We aren’t dating; I have no right to information from him. But that hasn’t kept me from being stressed and unable to focus on anything else. I want to know that he’s doing okay. I want to ask how his dad is. I want to check in and see if he needs anything.

Instead, I spend the day moping about. After hours of sleepily watching crap reality show reruns, I decide it’s time to put some clothes on and get out of my room for longer than it takes to get some coffee and say hi to the guys.

I grab a book and head out back to let Kermie root around in the grass for an hour or so. As I lie in the chair near the bottom of the porch watching him run around and dig in the dirt, I can tell why my grandmother must have loved this place so much.

There’s a unique peacefulness I haven’t felt in many places. Despite the chaos going on inside the house right now, outside here with the cool breeze coming off the water and the shade of the pine trees, I feel more relaxed than I ever have.

It makes me wish the hammock my mom always told me my grandmother loved was still swinging between the nearby trees. That would be the perfect touch to this outdoor paradise. But that’s a detail for the future owner to decide.

I must have dozed off because when I wake Kermie is lying on the ground next to the lounge chair and I can hear the guys loading up their trucks.

Deciding that sleep must have been what I needed after the hectic month I’ve had, I head inside to order some Chinese food and head back to bed. Sometimes you just need a lazy day where you sleep too much and overeat some greasy food.

By the time I’ve eaten the entire carton and finished reading half my book, I’m already yawning and it’s barely nine. I’m exhausted. I let Kermie out one last time before the two of us curl up in bed, even though I know he’ll make his way to the bathroom where his favorite blankets are before I wake in the morning.

“Scoot over, sweetness.” I hear a voice I recognize purr into my ear.
